4 Tips for Preparing To Transport a Classic Car
June 10, 2024For classic car owners, it’s ideal to keep vehicle mileage to a minimum—which means transport services are great for a car over long distances. Before you put the vehicle on a transport, you must ready the car. We’ll offer some simple tips on preparing your classic car for transport.
Clean the Car Inside and Out
The first thing to do is clean the vehicle inside and out. Even if you’re transporting your ride in an enclosed trailer, the car can get quite dirty from dust and debris. A thorough exterior wash and wax will protect the car’s paint on its journey.
Also, you should remove any personal belongings, like sunglasses, tools, or anything else, from the interior. Loose items can become dangerous projectiles while transporting the vehicle, so remove them to protect the car and your possessions.
Check the Fuel and Tires
Before putting the car in the trailer, you’ll want to check the fuel and tires. A full tank of gas can be a hazard, so it’s best to have about a quarter of a tank of gas and add a fuel stabilizer to protect the tank.
The tires are also crucial to the vehicle during transport. Compromised or underinflated tires can cause the vehicle to slide during transit. Double-check the tires’ PSI, and inflate as necessary.
Add the Maximum Luggage Weight
When signing a transportation contract, the transporter will allow a certain maximum weight for luggage in the car. Fill your vehicle with as much luggage as allowed.
The heavier weight will make the car more stable throughout its journey. The weight should be in luggage bags, not loose items.
Photograph the Vehicle Before Transportation
Before transporting the car, especially for a classic car sale, you should photograph as much of it as possible. Prior photographs could be integral to insurance claims if the vehicle is somehow damaged in transit. Take high-quality photos of all angles of the car to get a full view before its journey.
