Sure, there were Challengers with bigger and more powerful engines, but the weight of those engines often made them feel heavy and cumbersome to drive. The T/A was a totally different animal. Under the lightweight factory fiberglass scooped hood sits the numbers matching, potent 340C.I. V8 fed by three 2-barrel Holley carburetors and exhaling through dual side exit exhaust, mated to the super strong A727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission with the 'Slap Stik' shifter and an 8¾” rear axle. This powertrain, as well as the fiberglass front and rear spoilers, make for a lightweight yet planted racing homologation car that feels like its ready to hit the track and dominate over any opponent. This was proven in the 1970 Trans-Am racing series where the Challenger held its ground excellently against competitors, with drivers like Sam Posey who was at the wheel of the #76 and #77 Challengers. This Challenger has been signed by Posey himself on the air cleaner lid for all to see when you pop those hood pins. This is a real deal T/A with the A53 option shown on the trim tag as well as the supplemental Trans Am trim tag and correct, T/A only, engine code in the VIN.
